Protected Areas

The Turks and Caicos Islands have four main types of protected areas: National Parks, Nature Reserves, Sanctuaries, and Areas of Historical Interest, each designed to safeguard the environment while allowing different levels of use.
National Parks are primarily for recreation such as swimming and diving, and it is illegal to remove any plants or animals — living or dead — except in designated fishing zones and under specific regulations.
Nature Reserves are managed to maintain ecological balance while allowing limited activities such as agriculture, arboriculture, fish farming, and certain recreational or sporting uses.
Sanctuaries are strictly protected areas established to conserve natural ecosystems or specific species, particularly marine life, and often require permits for access.
Areas of Historical Interest protect important cultural or historical landmarks and may overlap with other protected area types, meaning they follow the same environmental restrictions while still allowing public access.
